CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
PROMOTING SAFE ENVIRONMENTS

With their inaugural "tip", Dome Security & Safety Corp., hopes to spark some discussion or thought with regards to how the business community and general residents can promote a safer environment to live and work in. If we can assist to this end, we would pleased to hear from you, along with any suggestions for the future.

Crime is something that at one time or another affects all of us. Whether we hear about it indirectly through the various forms of media, or experience it first-hand as a victim, it is an ever-present constant in our lives.

For the most part, police services handle crime in a reactive manner, so that only a small percentage of all serious crime results in the arrest of a culprit. This is said not to speak badly of the police, but to ensure an understanding that APPREHENSION is not just the answer, but PREVENTION as well.

Our first topic centres around a science that has been in existence from between 20 and 30 years in both the U.S and Canada. "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design" or CPTED, is one facet of crime prevention that is easy to apply, and generally inexpensive to implement. CPTED means that the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence and fear of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life. This can involve anything from commercial buildings, residences, parking lots, industrial parks, to recreational areas and so on.

Analyzing the characteristics of crime locations can prevent their recurrence. Criminals like to frequent areas that provide more suitable opportunities and less risk of getting caught. All criminals prefer locations where there is greater likelihood of fewer bystanders or witnesses, and minimal security. Litter, loiterers and graffiti are some indicators that a place is less desirable to be for the honest citizen. The honest person wants well-lighted places with good visability, good control over entrances/exits, and a sense of safety.

Crime prevention principles employed by CPTED focus on an analysis of how the features of the environment, and the policies that govern its management and use, can constrain criminal activity. It also encourages at the same time, positive behaviour on the part of the non-criminal element. A CPTED assessment can be conducted by Dome Security on any existing or pending structure or area.
